From Ballet to Blues:
Entertainers Pay Homage to American Icons of Music and Dance
TYSONS, Va. – Come enjoy Alchemy Ballet’s “Gala Americana,” a family-friendly and vibrant mix of classical and contemporary dance works and musical compositions celebrating America, featuring both masterpieces and new creations. Showtimes are 3pm and 7pm on Nov. 10 at The Vault at Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia.
New work will be unveiled by the formidable Fredrick Davis, a former principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem and the subject of the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary, “From the Streets to the Stage: The Journey of Fredrick Davis”. Davis will pay tribute to the legendary Phil Wiggins with the premier of his choreography to Wiggins’ harmonica recording based on Blues Master Sylvester Weaver’s “Guitar Rag.” Wiggins, who passed away earlier this year, has been described by The New York Times as the “virtuoso of Blues harmonica.” By way of paying further tribute to Phil Wiggins, award-winning tap dancer Baakari Wilder will perform with Ian Walters and Steve Wolf, members of Phil’s band, The Chesapeake Sheiks.
In homage to American icon Marilyn Monroe, Alchemy Ballet will perform the premier of "M” choreographed by Igor Bulitsin. The audience also will be treated to a Neoclassical ballet titled “Eternal Brilliance,” with choreography by Vasily Medvedev and Stanislav Fico--along with “The Story of Everything,” a contemporary ballet choreographed by Lauren Carnesi Daniels
The production also features Michael Rossi and other members of the D.C.-based Lindy Hop dance troupe Fidgety Feet accompanied by Rockabilly Blues artists Jess Eliot Myhre and Willie Barry, who will deliver their signature vocals and instrumentals.
Also on tap is Jessica Brown’s choreography to chart-topping soul singer Roberta Flack’s “Tryin’ Times.”
Alchemy Ballet Academy and Company, and non-profit parent organization Artists in Motion, pride themselves on cultivating excellence and artistry in ballet, while also celebrating diverse traditions and genres of dance and music. Working behind the scenes at Alchemy, a Vaganova-based ballet school and company, are Academy Director Marianna Rozanova, former professional ballerina with the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and incoming Managing Director Ivan Semirechenskiy, a former professional dancer of international renown and executive at Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

VERONNEAU and MUNIT MESFIN
Celebrating Legendary Women in Music:
Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Roberta Flack
Saturday, November 9, 8:00pm
The Vault at Capital One Hall
Tysons, VA
TYSONS, VA. – Join us for an unforgettable evening as award-winning artists Lynn Veronneau and Ken Avis of VERONNEAU–and Munit Mesfin–pay homage to the iconic music of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Roberta Flack. Veronneau will present timeless tracks from Joni Mitchell’s Blue and Carole King’s Tapestry, while Munit Mesfin, backed by Aleks Isotov on piano and Grant Le on bass, offers a heartfelt tribute to Roberta Flack.
Veronneau defies categorization, blending jazz, folk, and pop styles in a mesmerizing performance. The duo—vocalist Lynn Veronneau, originally from Quebec, and UK guitarist Ken Avis—captivate audiences with Lynn’s enchanting voice, impeccable harmonies, and Ken’s masterful guitar work. Their storytelling and artistry breathe new life into the classic songs of Joni Mitchell and Carole King, creating a fresh and intimate concert experience.
Munit Mesfin is an Ethiopian-American singer, songwriter, and producer known as a trailblazer of the Ethio-Soul movement. She combines jazz improvisation, reggae rhythms, and soulful melodies in a style uniquely her own. Influenced by artists like Girma Beyene, Miriam Makeba, Bob Marley, and Chaka Khan, Munit also has a deep admiration for Roberta Flack. Growing up immersed in her parents’ collection of jazz, soul, and blues recordings, she became “obsessed” with Roberta Flack’s best-selling First Take album. Years later, she performed several of Roberta’s songs at Mr. Henry’s where Flack’s career was launched. Soon after, Munit premiered her Roberta Flack tribute concert, hosted by Ken Avis at Creative Cauldron, and then had the honor of performing for Roberta in her New York City apartment.
To complement the evening, there will be two dance pieces performed by Alchemy Ballet Company and Academy members: Natasha Groves dancing to Veronneau’s live performance of Carole King’s award-winning song, “You’ve Got a Friend”---plus Vanessa Labbee and Daniel Berberian performing Jessica Brown’s choreography to Roberta Flack’s recording of “Tryin’ Times.”
Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience this soulful and uplifting celebration of Roberta Flack, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King with Veronneau and Munit Mesfin.
The event is presented by Artists in Motion and Alchemy Ballet, with support from ArtsFairfax and from individual donors.
